Dear list:
Months ago I asked offlist our Owen Daly for advice about the Voss Iron
strings in my Hubbard double: just a few years after being installed, their
sound had deteriorated badly, now sounding like a "singing buff".
Owen kindly recommended a few alternatives of which the obvious choice for
me was the Westphalian Iron by Marc Vogel.
The two materials are visibly different:
- my Voss Iron now looks very dark grey and opaque, and the material bends
very easily, as if it was pure iron with no carbon at all.
- Vogel Iron is dark grey but with a glossy surface, and behaves half-way
between iron and steel, as it should.
Today I replaced my seven 4' Voss Iron strings with Vogel Iron (same sizes).
My impressions:
- Immediately after replacement they sounded as dull as Voss Iron.
- About 10 min. later, they already sounded much better, though still not as
bright as their neighbours with other materials.
- I am sure that within a few days they will sound perfect.
Thanks Owen.
Best
