Aron is contemporary to Glareans, and Zarlino is younger
So the cultivation of the older conception of the modes endures 
alongside the newer one with 7 (&no plagal/authentic differentiation 
which belonged to the I-VIII scheme) .
I suppose each has its own universe of applicability: The I-VIII 
belongs to the tradition of plainsong

I have yet to learn where the the earliest reference to 7 modes is, but 
it does seem to be enshrined in the keyboard layout we know, which is 
at least as old as 1440 (Arnold de Zwolle)
