Hi All,
Well my 1784 Hubert clavichord keyplank is almost ready to cut apart. So
time to start thinking about lever-guide & balance pins.
I was thinking about using piano wire that was available at the local
hardware store and then bluing it. I have been on a bluing kick for the
last 2 years. But I might just go and buy some brass stock. I still haven’t
made up my mind.
The plans indicate that key lever-guide and balance pins are oval, 2.0 x
1.3mm and 1.8 x 2.2mm respectively. Is this typical? I have check some of
the harpsichord building guides and I have found no other reference to oval
shaped pins.
If it really does improve things I guess I could clamp the pin stock to the
bench and then “draw-file” each side with a bastard file until I get them
to 1.3 & 1.8mm. I assume it will be best to keep the bottom part that
enters the balance & back rail round?
Thanks,
Phil
