Red brass would not work apart from in the lower bass, as others said. More likely is indeed phosphor bronze, especially because you say that it doesn't sound good.
Beryllium copper also looks coppery, true. It comes in a variety of grades of hardness; the most brass-like ones (in terms of tensile strength) _can_ sound as good or better than whatever brass is available now, which is why I doubt that that's what you've got there. The harder grades of Beryllium copper tend to lack fundamentals which can be troublesome. There might be variations between different manufacturers that I'm unaware of which is why I've toned down my pro-beryllium-copper rhetoric in the past years. Also, we're excitedly waiting for Stephen to roll out (ha!) his new brass!
