"...Theodore, you say, I think, this: In one second, the ear will receive
415 complete cycles of a 415 tone (assuming a pure sine wave). ... But -
the ear isn't counting the cycles. The ear is *timing* the cycles. The
415.3 cycles will arrive slightly faster and therefore, in principle, can
be heard as a higher pitch..."
Hi Stuart,
Thanks for your message and trying to understand me. I am really sorry,
however, but this is simply not true. Please don't believe me, dive into
some books and check it out for yourself: multiple researchers have come to
the conclusion that the human ear cannot discern less than 1 Hz increments
when it comes to a single tone.

The situation of determining pitch is however different within acoustics
when there are several tones mixing at once. Further complications arise
where the ear's sensitivity differs according to specific ranges and a host
of other aspects.

This 1 Hz limit has to do with how the ear functions, and the soundwaves
coming to it are processed and/or interpreted, something that everyone in
the discussion so far has preffered to ignore completely - which I find
quite remarkable.

One of the people yesterday who said I was wrong about the 1 Hz limit, sent
a link which agreed with that standpooint; here it is again “...Some
findings indicate that, for moderate loudness levels, humans can detect a
frequency change of about 1 to 3 Hz for frequencies up to about 1000 Hz….”

This is only one of several scinetific findings on the subject.

Cheers,
Theodore
