totally what Lenora said. I came to Denton to get a doctorate in 1981 and never left. Ignore the politics and the 100+ weather in August, and the DFW metroplex, and Denton in particular, are great places to live.

University of North Texas has the largest early music program in the country led by Paul Leenhouts. Big Baroque orchestra, fine early music singers, etc. The area has the newly formed and highly acclaimed American Baroque Opera Company, the Dallas Bach Society, the Denton Bach Society, an active American Recorder Society, Texas Camerata, Orchestra of New Spain, Sonare, etc. I retired in 2009 from UNT and couldn't think of a better place to be musically, so I stayed. Also, it's not terribly expensive compared to many other early music areas. And Texans are warm, open, inviting folks, in spite of the politics down here. We just work around that.

But I've got a question that I think can only be answered here, even if it might be stretching the boundaries of the forum discussion. My wife is approaching retirement and would like to move somewhere warmer than our current location (Washington, DC metro area). But one of our top priorities for retirement is finding a location with a lively harpsichord/period performance community. I have occasionally performed on baroque flute and recorder and, ideally, would like to find a community where I would continue to have some opportunities to do so. We have attempted to research the question by, for instance, looking for colleges with music programs that have period performance programs, but we've not developed an efficient process for finding likely locations.
