I myself find performing ensemble music without a conductor
tremendously much more satisfying than performing it with one. That
part of Early Muisc resonated well with the '60's 'do your own thing'
mindset. Also we all read 'Small is Beautiful', and went out and
built ourselves clavihcords. It is not the mindset that tends to
prevail at the  most commercially successful levels, though.
