Both figures are nearly unimaginable.  But the figure I was told by  
DJW was 17,000.  Whether this was combined sales before he bought in  
or before he instituted his reforms I can't say but we were  
discussing the 'original kit' at the time.  And, as David was the  
source, there could have been a tendency to some braggadocio or  
subtle intimidation, as well.  That's my story (& I'm sticking to it!)
