Burton harpsichords can be a not unreasonable choice for a constrained budget with a serious caveat regarding the jacks. The instrument's quality will never be great, and beyond that you have factor of whether the kit was well built or not. That said, I have encountered a number that were very solidly built and had a surprisingly decent sound and feel.

The original jacks feature a tongue with integral plectra. There are very few replacements available anymore for these as spare stocks have been being used up by various technician/restorers including myself. To invest in all new jacks is not inexpensive, both in material cost and time, so you would want to factor that consideration into what you pay for the instrument. If the total price is right for your budget and a better instrument is not in your budget, then it could be a fair choice.

Good luck!

Subject: Burton Harpsichord

Hello,

I am new to harpsichord and someone near me has a Burton Concert Single, model #848B for sale. I haven’t seen or heard it yet. Does anyone have any thoughts to share about this instrument? I have a very small budget for a harpsichord and don’t mind doing work on it myself. I would like to know if there is any reason to avoid this instrument, such as, is it much more difficult than most to maintain? Does anyone have an opinion on the sound? I have learned that the jacks are rather odd but can be replaced. I would very much appreciate any information,

Sincerely,

Renee
