I think that is because, despite most of us being by nature 
argumentative, we are a charitable bunch and it takes a lot to upset us.

However, I have personally thought that some of the recent exchanges 
might have been better conducted off list. Since the email addresses 
of members are easily obtainable from the headers, it is quite simple 
to reply off list in the case of the continuation of a discussion 
that may not be relevant to the wider group. Doing this is only a 
matter of courtesy.
