Now I don't mind at all to adjust if I'm wrong, but wonder if that is the case here? I think the last post by Fritz restates my point, the violin steel e-string with the fine-tuner.
The elasticity of the string must have influence here. Opposite cases are brass and steel. For a brass string to get to pitch, the graph gets flatter, you turn and turn and pitch raises slowly, whereas for steel, it goes up almost in a straight line. Still, having seen all sorts of instruments, strung in brass, iron and steel, none should actually present real problems in tuning, unless the pins are not sitting well.
