John,
I don't have any indication that the core is being twisted during the
over-winding process.  Both ends of the lathe have two sets of identical
wooden gears (33 & 12 teeth) and they are linked together (synchronized) by
a 3/8" square rod inserted into a 3/8" inside dimension square tube. So one
end should not get ahead or behind the other.
