Vincent, I suggest checking the scale of the strings. If one uses Frank
Hubbard's convention of the c above middle c as the standard, scales of
11" or shorter at a-415 can and probably should be strung in brass. I
agree with the the dictum that those strings sound best which are close
to their breaking points and for a scale of 11", iron is nowhere near
its breaking point and will sound relatively flaccid and uninteresting.
For scales above 11", brass will not stand and will experience
widespread breakage until the scale shortens in the deepest bass. One of
the mistakes the otherwise brilliant John Shortridge made (probably
Frank Hubbard's fault if you look at Hubbard's Italian stringing lists)
was to string his beautiful little Italians in iron. If they are still
around and still in iron, they should be re-strung in brass.
My opinions, of course but they are working for me.
