according to wikipedia article' baroque music', the 'baroque period'  
was named (invented(?)) in 1919 (Carl Sachs, art historian and father 
of organology). According to the article the term became current in the 
1940s but was criticized as implying a false stylistic continuity and 
consistency as late as the 1960s

But we are stupider now, and radio announcers can say such nonsensical 
things as 'Rameau is the French Bach'
