Hello Martin,

Thank you for posting the pictures & the reference to the book (I just order a copy for me).

I have some vague recollection that the late English harpsichords had structural problems over the ages. If I remember well they tended to implode or did I get this totally wrong?

Greetings,

Chris.

Onderwerp: Re: A few Qs and comments about Kirckman

The 1766 Jacobus Kirkman double in slot Amerongen is in good condition and is, apart from four replacement jacks, in full posession of all its original parts. I made use of the opportunity and made many photos as I went about checking all the moving little parts of organic nature, hogs and birdies. The only time the instrument left the castle was in 2004 I believe, when there was risk of a flooding and a part of the historical collection was evacuated, the Kirk went to Utrecht and was decently restrung in Rose-wire. The original cloth is still on the jackrail, keys and keyframe. I have no idea about the present dampers. Except that the 8' are double-damped, originally, but square flag or slanted?
Photos of the 1766 and all its parts are in my album, see the link. Including the bridge pin placement to get the 8' strings more similar in length, and the low set hooks for the bass back-pinning.
Of course, we now have the book on 'The Royal Harpsichordmaker Jacob Kirkman' Charles Mould, Thomas Strange and Peter Mole.
