none of those sophisticated gauge tools are necessary. one can make a
simple thickness gauge by cutting the same kind of tall 'U' shape from wood
and inserting, at its mouth - facing each other - a sharpened screw and a
slightly rounded machine bolt, as a scratching point and a backing 'anvil'.
you can adjust the space between smooth bolt end and sharp point end to any
desired gap. When you draw the soundboard through this gap, the areas
thicker than the gap will be lacerated with scratches by the point. When
you have planed these scratches away, you will know that these former
prominences are now the thickness of the gap between bolt and screw of your
homemade gauge. Naturally you will want to begin with a gap only slightly
smaller than your thickest areas, and gradually reduce the gap as you
reduce the soundboard thickness, as described.
oh, but you want to *measure* a sounboard's thickness, do you? Why?
You can see though how this technique might be adaptable, say, with a
crayon instead of a point
