I used normal hide glue on my last papering job. I wetted the surface to be glued first to compensate for the fact that as the paper dries it will pull the lid cheek etc. hollow. I only brush the glue onto the paper, there is enough time before the glue sets if the workshop is warm enough. I would be wary of liquid hide glue because it may contain a nasty acid such as nitric which may cause the paper to break down in time.
