Yesterday I got an email from my provider that I have an infection in
my computer that is sending spam, and unless I deinstall and reinstall
my operating system in 2 days my internet connection would be cut off

I wrote back to ask, among other things what evidence there was for
this, and got in reply a link to my case by spamcop.net
There I saw that the single putative 'Spam' incident that had been
traced to my computer was an email I sent to a member of the list,
asking him if he could identify a certain singer of Handel

This member's identification of my email as spam resulted in this
rather serious disruption of my work yesterday
I spent some 4 hours studying all the various ways in which I could
heal my computer and protect it in future
All quite unnecessary.
This action of his was not as spiteful as his writing offlist to
list-people to tell them I am 'mentally ill', but its effects were
rather more troubling and time consuming

So a warning to everyone, that identifying an email as spam is a very
careless way to deal with unwanted messages that are not spam.

The man did of course know that my message was not spam. I think he
probably knows that I am not 'mentally ill' either.

I wrote this email using his full name, but I changed it to 'a member'
to show that I have my wits very much about me
