No device is as precise as the human ear.
Ketil Haugsand visited me some weeks ago. He insisted on tuning one of my harpsichords himself (while I was still in the kitchen).
He took his mobil phone to find a proper a' and did the rest just using his ears. Ketil called the result his "Jägermeister"-tuning.
My harpsichord has never sounded like this before!
Cheers
Michael

Hi Richard!
I am curious. What do you need the tuning forks for?
Hope it is just for some experiments, not for harpsichord tuning.
AFAIK, tuning a harpsichord string from a tuning fork is notoriously
unreliable: I recall having read this more than once over the past decades.
It also coincides with my experience: the error is about 1/2 Hz, which for tuning forks in common use (from 380 up to 480Hz) amounts to about 2 Cents.
Now, 2 Cents are a negligible error for the initial tuning note, but for the remaining 11 notes in the partition, you try to reduce the error to 1 Cent or less, which can be achieved even by tuning by ear historical temperaments with historical methods, i.e. with no beat counting.
(For example in meantone checking the purity of major thirds and equality of fifths, in Pythagorean and Vallotti by checking the purity of the fifths, and more elaborate but equally accurate methods are available for Rousseau's ordinare and some others).
