Reminds me of a former colleague who categorised all works written 
after (I think it was) 1800 as Modern Music, following the custom 
(certainly up to 1970) of the catalogue in the reading room of the 
British Museum, which in those day consisted of entries in large 
leather bound legers, sometimes typed on a slip of paper and glued in.
