I do it exactly as Mike does. three (usually) layers of relatively
coarse woll cloth (e.g. old army blanket). I generally stitch them
loosely together and tack the first to the jack rail but I have also
simply cut the bottom one (in position) slightly longer but all three
slightly too short, stretching this one beyond the other two and
tacking it only at both ends. I tend to do it this way with recessed
jack rails such as Rucker and most french have. With germans and
italians with their rather thicker and often tapered (in thickness)
rails, I use the stitched-together method.
