I agree with Gesine. We should listen to the logic, the character of the instrument we are playing and of course the arguments and the sheer beauty of the music. Older fingering systems then just seem to fall into place. The ancients weren't stupid! I think it is Claudio Di Veroli who points out in one of his ebooks that people nowadays play fast because they are taught to, but more important than the any speed wizardry are the music and the instrument themselves.
