Many years ago an harpsichordist phoned me saying that after he returned
from holidays all strings of his italian were close to the jacks. He
took the instrument in my workshop and we both tried to understand what
happened.
Guides were ok, everything was ok.....after a while I noticed a pale
shadow at the left end of the nut.
It was clear that he nut has moved to the right about 5 mm. but it was
still glued on the wrestplank !!
I had to unstrung the harpsichord, unglue the nut which was glued with
PVA and reglue it in position with hide glue (also putting some nails
under to fix the position, since the maker of this instrument has not
done that !!).

Perhaps a harpsichord joint creeping a bit is more desirable than it catastrophically failing. [I really don’t know about this, though.]
