This winter was very dry where I live and I was going through 15 L of distilled water per day for two small cold vapour humidifiers. I purchased a much larger floor standing model for well under 200 euros. It uses tap water but can still go through 20 L per day. It works well but is on the noisy side.
After terrible damage to their collection of harpsichords and lutes during the cold and dry winter break, the local music conservatory belatedly decided to purchase some humidifiers. They bought six Swiss-made machines (Defensor PH15 by Condair) which are very efficient and economical to run and fairly quiet but cost 3500 euros a piece!!
I would definitely ask to hear the machine running before buying as, if it is too noisy, people are going to want to turn it off.
