One more tidbit:
My well-sealed music studio is 10X30 with a high ceiling and large windows. Once I added those door seals, when I was maintaining 30%, this was easily accomplished using the smallest humidifier sold at the local drug store, with perhaps only weekly fills.

Bruce and Matthew,
Thank you for your responses. I think it is time to ask B&G to "seal" the room so we can use a smaller humidifier and have more control over the moisture in the air. I think that the only virtue to what we had been doing was that during the heating season we knew that the instruments (and the window panes and exterior wall) were well hydrated.
Again, thank you.
Dan

Subject: humidifier recommendation?
We store our school's harpsichords, clavichord, and fortepiano in a drafty room that has two leaky windows and around 2700 cubic feet. Our humidifier, a 20-year-old Kenmore console model that holds around 14 gallons, died.
Does anyone care to recommend a readily-available low-maintenance unit that you use and are satisfied with? I hope that the replacement will not require filling more frequently than 2-3 times per week.
Thanks.
