I attended a jazz concert last night, featuring a big band of some two dozen players: trumpets, trombones, saxes, drums (no clavichords). It would have been powerfully loud, but for some reason they felt the need to amplify the whole thing, with microphones in front of every horn! It was earsplitting beyond the point of comfort, and I could only wonder:  Why?
