One of my favorite “modern” pieces is De La Mare’s Pavane from Lambert’s Clavichord. In the late ‘70s, I invited Larry Palmer to play a concert in the Organ Hall at the University of Houston. The first half of the program was played on my then-new Dowd with its “fizzy” phosphor bronze and steel music wire (it did produce a rather grand sound in the reverberant acoustic of the hall). The second half was performed on the von Beckerath organ, a rather large instrument for the room. In order not to blast everyone’s ears, Larry began on the organ with De La Mare’s Pavane on soft flue stops. It was extremely effective.
For anyone interested who has some spare change lying around, the score of Lambert’s Clavichord is available on Amazon for only $1,495.00. There is only one copy, so don’t delay.
