Bruce
I am a physicist but one of the great pleasures of building (and playing)
musicale instruments is leaving all that behind when I close the lab for
the day.

Don't discount the amount of "sink" of the soundboard as you tension the
string. Any factor (pin twist, bridge sinking, linear stretch, torsional
stretch) contributes to countering the action of the tuning wrench and
making it less sensitive.

People often ask me why we only place a "fine tuner" on the E of a
violin---the E string nowadays is generally steel while the lower 3 strings
are of wound polymers (e.g. perlon) and have a lot more stretch so they
react a lot more slowly to the twist of the peg and don't merit the fine
tuner. And when we play on gut strings tuning is much easier. A good case
for building a Lautenwerk!
