Vince, in my just sent reply, I forgot to mention the issue of the nut
and tuning pins. I had occasion a few years ago to convert a 8' - 4'
Italian harpsichord to 2 x 8' configuration. That was very easy of
course. I left the 4' bridge in place and pulled the 4' bridge pins. In
its original condition, the 4' and 8' strings shared the same nut and
the tuning pins were in a double row, exactly as would have been the
case had it been 2 x 8' originally. The only difference for the 4'
strings was that they sloped somewhat leading from the higher nut to the
lower 4' bridge.
Using this same technique in your anticipated conversion will allow you
to use the same nut, nut pins and tuning pins as was formerly used for
one of the two 8' choirs you will be removing.
