Well there is the distinguished gentleman from MIT who is working on printing jacks from 'wood' as soon as they are able to get the cellulose based printing ink to flow better. If you want cheep precision guides out of an alternative material I can stamp you out a set of aluminum ones with Lutz's jigs. But if it was me I'd get a wood set from Hubbard or Zukerman on the affordable side if not commission a builder. Guides along with jacks are the heart of the instrument, if they are not made accurately, you have no instrument, just problems and noise. Plastic, as we have seen with jacks, potentially has problems of warpage and in time brittleness. This is not to say poorly cured or treated wood does not suffer the like. I have yet to see a printer in the musical instrument trade that could do a piece long enough. Laser printing with wood however is a viable option. I have seen key guides for 'hurdy gurdies' done quite well. I suppose we'll see carbon fiber guides in time.
