Hi Ibo,

Thank you for correcting my ignorance about W III. My understanding of the
history has been wrong.

As to sound, de gustibus non est disputandum. I simply don't like it - just
my feeling.

I do like Lehmann very much. Again, a personal view.

Interestingly we were renovating a brass strung Italian recently and had it
tuned in various 18c tunings, and then decided to tune it in quarter comma
meantone and the instrument palpably came alive. Really quite surprising, a
very marked difference. I have been speculating whether this has something
to do with harmonics of the brass alloy wire somehow being happier with the
meantone intervals, but I am not sure that makes any sense. I am aware this
experience sounds like complete nonsense from a total crank, but it was
commented on by several listeners. That instrument just wanted to be in
meantone, true to its origins, I guess!

Andrew
