I would have to say also that I feel sure he re-recorded them not particularly to use a more fashionable instrument but principally because his musical outlook and practice had matured, a constant and lifelong process for all musicians (one hopes!) The set of three over time is valuable, to learn and understand how his approach became more refined, and more plastic, as David so eloquently put it.

In addition to the 1953 Ammer recording, there is a 1965 recording on a Skowroneck Dulcken (I think this was his first of many recordings on the Skowroneck), and then a 1976 recording on a Dowd. Anyone know if he recorded them yet again another time?
