Julian in response to my passing mention of using the casein powder from Sinopia, asks:

I confess that at the time, although I knew that water-planing was a venerable and widely-used technique with hide and rabbit-skin glue gesso, I didn’t know it could be done with casein. I will file that away, because the casein gesso was pretty decent, I thought. I do think that although I have significant issues with Sinopia’s much-vaunted finished line of liquid milk paints mentioned in connection with their page with the main casein recipe, I think that their casein powder is basically just a very competently-made version of what has always been done separating the stuff from the curds.
