I have to wonder, Knight, if Schaffs make historically correct open-wound strings. Maybe they do. Dunno.
I am going to be VERY sorry that I shared this, but I have made a shitload of open-wound clavichord strings for several decades, but only for my own instruments. The making of them is basically trivial, but the clearing of the shop, shutting down the ability to continue the work in hand, is not trivial.Tim Hamilton should be your first and best choice.
So I would charge about zero for the string, and a big bundle for the clearing the space, setting up the machine, arguing over the design of the string, and making it.
Tim is your best bet, I think.
But piano companies and guitar companies make close-wound strings, like what you see on guitars and pianos. These have little resemblance to historical open-wound strings, which, so far as I know, with the exception of a tiny bit of evidence for twined/twisted strings on various early harpsichords and clavichords, are the the only ones of any relevance to historically-informed instruments.
