Chris, the first thing you must do is analyze where the "thump" is
coming from. The key comes to rest on some felt cloth of unknown
hardness when it is released. The jack may or may not come to rest on
the key cloth, according to whether it is hanging on its damper. The
front of the key rises upon release, maybe to contact the
nameboard/batten. Are all the notes subject to this thumping or only a few?
Screws on the bottom of the jacks would imply that the key end felt has
been dimpled and hardened, but this would not necessarily be even across
the compass of the keyboard since the notes at the extremities have
suffered less wear than those in the center.
Careful analysis is the order of the day!
