I would not imagine there is a normal width for a band. To my taste
they are usually too wide. I like the width on the Antunes, which is
slightly variable but in the half inch range, and is perhaps a whole
inch from the edge. But different proportions will make different
impressions: you can draw pictures of bands of various widths with
various distances from the edge and decide which appeals to you most.
The Mac Taggarts feel that less than an inch width looks 'mean' (where
their usage is different from the Duke of Bunn's), and more than 35mm
looks heavy. But remember there are various case heights. Why not mock
up with paper and ask friends?
The MacT's also suggest making the lower band a tad wider than the
upper, and making the vertical parts of the banding at the bentside
joints a tad closer to the angles (cos you have double margins here)
When deciding on which gold you might want to consider using 'bronze'
powders instead - one can achieve very nice effects, and some even
prefer the colours of the various alloys (aswell the use of more than
one - darker below lighter, or coppery-er below goldy-er)
I agree with the MacTs that the edge can be nicer if it is not made
with masking tape, but with guidance from an incised line - not a cut
but a long thin dent, so made with a blunt edge (before paint).
I havent done this yet but will do in the next few days
