Although this doesn't solve the printing or printing accuracy issue for full size harpsichord drawings, here's a link to an interesting technique for inexpensively scanning large documents using an old flatbed scanner with its lid removed:

The scanning part of the technique would be tedious, but the author references software and a script he wrote to stitch the images together with minimal effort. This method might be worthwhile to copy drawings when reproductions are no longer available.
If I can ever get my hands on a full size Burton plan, I'm going to give this method a try.
