I think working to measurements is definitely a good way to acquire
that intimite familiarity with your material and tools that will allow you
to work 'intuitively', making soundboards by smell alone, as owen
describes. Measuring and working towards recorded example measurements is a
way of getting virtual feedback when you dont have a mentor handy to make
guiding comments.

It's like using a honing guide and particular numerical angles, for
sharpening plane blades - it teaches you how to sharpen without numerical
angles or honing guides
