You are probably right that it may be too much fuss.

Incidentally, I wanted to mention the masking tape I use, which is thick, marvellously sticky and superior to the usual hardware store tape.  It's actually freezer tape, like this stuff:

I bought a roll back in 1994 when I got my first harpsichord, and I still have not gotten to the end of it.  After all these years it continues to stick well, even to plastic.  The roll is much smaller than the typical masking tape roll, so it fits easily into a toolbox.
