Exactly, BM.

I think it essential to know a good metal fabrication shop and a good mill shop myself, so I don't need to invest in expensive equipment that will be used only very part time in my work week, and will take up valuable shop space. That said, certain equipment does indeed earn its keep and space, of course, and it is less hassle by far to get quality equipment. Cheap stuff has limited uses. I was gifted a small inexpensive band saw, which i only use when I need to trim a lot of jacks to length or cut blocks for clamping, etc. and don't feel like doing my usual hand sawing. It takes up little space and does a quick job for small cuts, but is not adequate for long cuts or heavy duty work.

If you aren't planning on making a lot of moldings, I would indeed just order some from a maker, or why not do it by hand?

When I am restoring antiques with unusual molding shapes, I make my own scratch stock scraper with the correct profile and make my own moldings, burning enough calories in the process to enjoy large pieces of carrot cake with impunity and building up shoulder and forearm muscles nicely.

Subject: Re: Ruckers outsourcing

Considering the restrictive nature of guild regulations, I find it interesting to consider that many modern harpsichord makers who fabricate pretty much everything for the instrument, including metal parts like bridge pins and tuning pins, and also do the decorative work, would not have been permitted to carry out some of these tasks back in the old days. In our attempts to be historical, we are actually a bit un-historical!
