For a complete listing of the works of the Chevalier de St. Georges
(knighted by Louis XV), see the appendix in Gabriel Banat's recent biography, 'Sword
and Bow'. He was simultaneous the fencing champion of France as well as the
leading violinist and composer in the later 18th century. Initially he fell
afoul of the Revolution but was later the victorious general of a Revolutionary
army. He was born on Guadeloupe of a wealthy French landowner father and an
African slave mother. His Christian name was Joseph Boulogne. He wrote many
violin sonatas, concertos, concerti concertanti, , symphonies, 12 operas (1
survives), and songs, and commissioned and conducted the Haydn 'Paris'
symphonies with his Parisian orchestra. The CBC has issued a docudrama DVD on him
with excellent performances by the Tafelmusik Orchestra of Montreal.
