on the subject of screwed on hinges - the lid hinge screws on many  
instruments  have pulled out and as you know, slot-headed screws are  
very difficult to find now. I note the frequent historical practice  
of shortening a screw by simply cutting it. This facilitates  
replacing a loose screw with one of the next gauge but what about  
repairs to the wood?
