Hi all,
Does anyone know the original temperament of the Hubert 1784 clavichord?
The data sheet provided with the plans indicate
1). 3-octave span 470 ½
2) Scalings:
String Length
f3 85.5
c3 121
f2 187
c2 254
f 1 378
c1 504
f 712.5
c 871.5
F 1020
C 1097
Short scalings of this clavichord indicate that it should be tuned to
R +2 a tone above the more common clavichords which have a c2 scaling of
about 285-290mm.
I am not sure exactly what the R+2 means. I am currently reading Peter
Bavington’s Clavichord Tuning and Maintenance book.
I have just finished making the open, over-wound strings and installed
them. I am just about ready to hammer in the tangents. So I guess now is
the time to think about temperament. I don’t really have much preference at
this time since it is my first instrument.
Any suggestions would be welcomed,
regards,
Phil
