Dongsok has given you some good suggestions. In particular, I second
the idea of keeping an eye on Craigslist. I have recently had
discussions with the friend who will be executor of my estate. There is
no one locally who will want my instrument when the time comes
(hopefully not for a while yet!) and it may well end up there for a very
good price.
In case you don't know what Dongsok meant when he spoke of "revival"
harpsichords: in the 1950s and early 60s, some folks began building
harpsichords, which had not really been done for more than a century.
They were well intentioned but did not follow historical practices in
many ways, partly due to lack of knowledge and partly because they
thought modern materials would create a more stable (and/or cheaper)
instrument. This is where the question of your needs comes into play.
An instrument built by a skilled maker using historic methods will teach
you a lot about what a good instrument should feel and sound like. But
if you are looking for an instrument to carry around to gigs, some of
the better revival instruments might suit. The school where I taught
owned one of the early Zuckermann kits with a straight bentside -- very
unhistorical but actually not bad sounding, particularly for accompaniment.
