Hi Richard,

Re digital calipers, it's not so much that they are springy at small
measures (they are springy at all distances), but that even with good ones
if you only measure at the tip there is torque on the blades due to the
length and they read slightly off, but the good ones read a fairly reliable
known difference off (normally about 0.0005"), compared to using the top,
thick part of the measuring blades. There are a few interesting reviews
about this phenomenon on the web. With high quality digital ones you can
get a measurement exact enough to distinguish what gauge of wire is on a
harpsichord.
