Pardon me for what I’m sure is a basic question.
I just finished a fun program with a cellist, accompanying his Vivaldi using a Dowd double flemish circa 1977. I also used my Zuckerman Flemish IX for a mashup of a Froberger Partita with the C Minor Bach unaccompanied cello suite, so I could play the Froberger in 1/4 comma meantone. (The mashup worked really well!)
When tuning the Dowd, it was striking how much less touchy the tuning is. The pins are the same size and the instruments are about the same length, but the Dowd strings don’t change pitch nearly as much for a similar crank on the wrench. This sure makes it easier to tune the Dowd….
What gives?
Is it a simple matter of different wire - mine having a stiffer composition?
Thanks
