These small router bits are very useful:

Although designed for decorating small things like jewellery boxes, I was able to make harpsichord moldings successfully using these bits (#1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 are in my collection).  The profiles can be quite elaborate, but if you expose only a portion of the bit's edge, you can come up with all sorts of interesting treatments.  They don't quite match anything historical, but are attractive nonetheless.  I highly recommend them!
