Thanks for your call for a reasonable approach to this. (What, were you
watching (or attending) the Jon Stewart event in Washington DC on Saturday?) I
certainly have my opinions about Ms. Comparone, but they are kept to
myself or perhaps my spouse or some close friends.
I think this list exists to flame only makers and temperament experts.
Actually, I am totally kidding about that.
I love the strong opinions expressed about the making or maintaining of
instruments, and love all the discussions about temperaments and theory and
theories. But turning any of the strong opinions into personal insults is
unnecessary and ridiculous, even if you know "they" are wrong. Certainly, if
things are expressed that are factually or demonstrably wrong, they should
be pointed out, and strongly is fine. But not personally.
BTW, I really hate it when a reviewer or anyone says (for example) that
so-and-so plays with no feeling. I think it is presumptuous to think one KNOWS
what any player is or is not feeling. That person may not get it across
the footlights, and that can certainly be mentioned. But no further
conclusions can possibly be drawn, can they?
