Charles, the link makes it very clear that beats can be heard - on an
organ. You would have served your argument better had you used a
harpsichord. Frank Hubbard said somewhere that the beats of intervals on
a harpsichord were more or less ephemeral, so setting the bearings could
be challenging. Since the current discussion of tuning by ear is pretty
much associated with harpsichords, which need pretty regular tuning, the
use of an organ, with its steady, undiminishing tone and with a
completely different set of overtone strengths, proves very little about
MP3. I am not writing to reject your claim, only that you have chosen a
poor example for us harpsichord wienies.
