Sagging pipes and bad zinc (On topic in a round about way) On 23/02/2007, at 3:02 PM, Rodney Myrvaagnes wrote: Seb mentioned that nothing happens (in Australia ) that happens elsewhere in the world. If Sagging pipes with 'bad zinc' aren't common in Australia, then there is likely some link. Since Zinc suffers from Zinc Pest in very cold climates, it may be likely that the cold somehow changes the character of the metal allowing it to sag. Has anyone checked whether zinc-covered bars in French bistros are crumbling? Sagging wouldn't be a problem because the zinc is nailed to a wooden substrate, but corrosion crumbling would be serious. Also, if I understood Seb. correctly, his implication was that things that happen in the rest of the world never happen in Bob Elms' _state_, not in the whole of Australia. At least, this is how I have interpreted Bob's messages. Whether 'state' is a political subdivision, as in the US, or simply Bob's 'state of mind' I lea! ve to other wiser heads. In *my* state, AFAIK, zinc pipes do not sag - whether they are airconditioned or not. The organ I play came from cold Yorkshire when 110 years old in 1988. There are zinc pipes in the Choir, on a bit of a lean because the rackboards are splitting, but they are definitely not altering their shape. The Great Trumpet pipes that sagged last summer are all lead, even to the bottom pipes. These pipes also show crumbling corrosion in the feet and boots which does not bode well for their future. (The sagging occurred where there is no visible corrosion.) Regards Lesley de Voil Director of Music St. Andrew's Anglican Church Indooroopilly Queensland Australia (1 message)

Andrew's Anglican Church Indooroopilly Queensland Australia
